Are You Making Disciples?
Matthew 28:19-20 New International Version (NIV) “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I a with you always, to the very end of the age.”
It is often referred to as the “Grand Commission” the last recorded words of our Lord in the Gospel of Matthew. As a former Jehovah’s Witness, I personally believed that I was heeding Jesus’ command to make disciples by engaging in what was called the “door to door ministry”. I can remember many Saturday mornings waking up to walk the neighborhoods with fellow JW’s to knock on doors to pass out pamphlets. The problem is the message: The Jehovah’s Witnesses are preaching a message different than the gospel recorded in the scriptures. (Galatians 1:8).
The Apostle Paul engaged in all forms of public ministry including his ” marketplace ministry” (Acts 17:17) These days, I find myself missing my old routine of talking to people wherever they are about the gospel especially now since I was lost but now found by Jesus.
God has laid a mission upon each one of hearts to preach the Gospel:
- How are you fully accomplishing your ministry? (2 Timothy 4:5)
- What role does the Holy Spirit play in our ministry? (Acts 1:8)
- In this ever changing society, what avenues of ministry can be used to reach people? (Acts 17:17)
We will explore these questions over the next few weeks to challenge our thinking and to be “fully equipped for every good work” ( 2 Timothy 3:17)
Prayer: Father thank you for deliverance from religion so that we may gain relationship with you. Help us to see people the way that you do God. Let us bear the Light of your message to mankind through the holy scriptures. Help us to seize opportunities to preach to others about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who set the captives free with the message of the salvation. Thank you for the Holy Spirit that helps us radiate your personality outward to others. May those who encounter us feel like they have encountered the Living God.
In the Name of Jesus we pray, Amen
