Evangelism Reflections of an Ex-Jehovah's Witness Soul Food With the Bread of Life

Daily Scripture and Prayer- 2 Timothy 4:5

2 Timothy 4:5, “As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”

How do we fulfill our ministry today?

As discussed in a previous article, the Grand Commission or the call to make disciples was a command laid upon each follower of Jesus Christ (https://healingforthesouloutreach.wordpress.com/2017/07/25/daily-scripture-and-prayer-matthew-281920/) . To fulfill our ministry today we must first examine the message we are preaching. As a former Jehovah’s Witness and  “regular pioneer”, I can say that the message wasn’t our main focus. ( a regular “pioneer” is a  volunteer that devotes 70 plus hours monthly preaching in the streets) I can say that the preaching and teaching work we were engaged in revolved around numbers and recruitment. Since I have come to Christ, I have come to appreciate the beauty and simplicity of gospel more than I ever did my whole 30-year tenure as a Jehovah’s Witness. The Gospel is not made up of convoluted and man-made doctrine. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is an announcement about Jesus (who is the revelation of God the Father) and the kingdom that He taught us to pray for. We, Christians, have the grand privilege of spreading the Gospel to others in our daily lives.

The Apostle Paul in instructing Timothy warned against false teachers and those who followed such teachers. (2 Timothy 4:1-4) In our journey to be more like Christ, we are encouraged by Paul to keep a clear mind or keep an eye on what we are doing so that we will not fall into the trap of entertaining false doctrine.  Jesus is the new covenant teacher who fulfilled the Torah and our “teachings” should line up with what is in scripture. We should make it our aim to study the teachings of Jesus as found in scripture and to share the light that we receive with everyone we meet.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, We pray that You would find us to be honorable vessels to use in your kingdom. We ask that You impart to us through the Holy Spirit the words to say to soften the hearts of the people that You draw to us . Help us to find unique and fresh ways to share the gospel with our neighbors. We thank You that the Gospel is a healing balm to our souls and that through the saving work on the cross we have been set free from sin and death.

In our next article in our short series on discipleship, we will discuss the Holy Spirit’s role in our ministry.
